Controversial netminder Ray Emery graces the cover of next week’s The Hockey News. The Flyers took a chance on the enigmatic keeper this offseason by signing him to a 1 year “prove it” deal, instead of resigning inconsistent backstop Martin Biron.
Ray’s talent is unquestioned. He has the rare combination of size and quickness that NHL gm’s covet. The real question is whether the fiery Emery will be able to keep his temper and off-ice behavior under control.
His most notable incidents include verbal sparring with teammates Chris Neal and Brian McGrattan and an infamous youTube clip of Ray pushing a trainer on his KHL team. Emery is also noted to have had over 30 traffic violations during his time in Ottawa, including a road rage incident in which he was sued for threatening the life of a man who allegedly cut him off.
Personal issues aside, he’s a talented, young, cheap goaltender with a fantastic defense corps in front of him. He’ll take his first steps towards proving his critics wrong on Sept. 13th when training camp begins in Voorhees for the Flyers.
