Well it didn’t go exactly as planned but the Birds did actually get their man. Former Buccaneer tight end Alex Smith inked a free agent deal with the Eagles today about 48 hours after being released by the New England Patriots. You lucky fans who happen to own an LJ Smith jersey can dust them off as the new Mr. Smith plans to wear #82 in this weekend’s opener.
The 6’4 258lb tight end was a 3rd rd pick of Tampa in the 2004 draft out of Stanford. Touted as a big time prospect coming out, Smith has not lived up to his potential. However he is a vast improvement over the Eagles current depth at the position and is a viable big bodied red zone threat. At 27, Smith is still young enough where is career can still be on the upswing. He’s coming off a 21 catch 250 yd season in which he reeled in 3 td’s.
To make room on the roster the Birds did not release Reggie Brown. Oddly enough they removed the only other backup tight end they had, Tony Curtis. The move still leaves them with only two on the active list and rookie Rob Myers on the practice squad.
